It would cost Apple a boatload of cash if they have to recall the iphone 4 because of the call drop problem. The PR hit would cost them even more if they don’t do something to fix it besides trying to jam loyal customers for an extra $30 for a “bumper“. People must really love their Apple gadgets to put up with this stuff. I am not an Apple fan but did get an ipod touch as a gift and it is great. And I do respect their company’s success and the fact that they are a debt free company! But I would not buy 1st generation products after this debacle.
Stitcher.com is a great way to get a variety of music & talk shows on your iphone or ipod touch. Pandora is my choice for a music app but stitcher fills the talk need. It has more stations than you can ever need so enjoy. One of my favorites is the Petros & Money Sports talk show from California.. just search them in stitcher.
My little Blackberry Pearl has been abused by me at work. And the trackball has all but stopped working when presses to “enter” something. I have to MASH it to get it to work. Well I finally took the time to look up a possible fix. I found a video tutorial & it worked great. Check it out if your trackball on your blackberry is jacked up.
I do not want to sound uncaring…. but if I were working in the printing industry in any way I would at least prepare myself for other work. I am not saying tomorrow that they will close the doors on newspapers, printing presses, or book distributors. I am just saying that the vast majority of them will close in a relatively short time.
Textbooks are likely a safe business for a while because govt & Universities, which go hand in hand, don’t care to be cost efficient. That is another article in itself. But all the free blogs online, all the free / cheap ebooks, and free online newspapers make it unnecessary to print much of anything. I know there will be hardcore “paper book lovers” that want books & I get that. But overall it is an outdated item.
I have an ipod touch which is no where near the comfortable reading experience that a kindle is but… I read a good bit on it. I read articles on a newspaper that interest me , not the whole paper. I could likely get the feed for every newspaper in the country to fit on my ipod. Think about that!
There will still be a need for reporters, although I would argue that so many today just tow the company line or rehash a govt press release that we could use a few less. Reporters can still report news and make a living. Companies will spring up that pay to have good reporting online.
There will still be a need for writers obviously. The format in which their material is delivered is just different now and vastly cheaper to reproduce. A writer can write a great book. She can self publish for free. Create an ebook for free and digitally send it out for free basically. That benefits the writer & consumer. The workers who used to deliver printed content from writers don’t benefit directly but that is just the way it is in business.
A new technology comes along and wipes out the old one. Wagon makers did not have their jobs forever after the car got popular. Life goes on, just be ready print people.
I have been online for a long time now… since about 1997. So there is not much that impresses me. I liked ebay until it got too crowded …. for selling at least. I still like youtube but don’t have time to watch a lot. Netflix is one of the best ideas combined with implementation I have ever seen. Facebook and twitter are cool but both are time wasters if you let them be.
The coolest thing I have used online in a long time is Pandora Online Radio. I have used it for a while now and still am pleased with it. Best thing to happen to music in my lifetime maybe. Its free by the way.
Crash has been at the top of Netflix 100 for as long as I can remember. It was a great movie. There are just a few that I have not seen on the list. Most are good and many are great. But some are terrible… I am looking right at you “Burn after Reading” & “Get Smart”.
In my opinion LifeHacker.com is the best website for technology use and news. And it is simple enough for new computer users. They have tons of content and easy to understand tips. If you are new to the internet I recommend Life Hacker. It condenses the internet’s best tech stuff in one website.
One way for Georgia businesses to save money is by using skype. It is good for voicemail, a regular phone line, chatting, etc. Many features are free and others are so cheap ($3 / month to call landlines & cell numbers) that it can save you some serious money. If you can get rid of your land line and use skype only that could save you $600 or more a year. That is a lot in todays economy.
I have an online number that is $30 a year & $3 per month calling to normal phones & free calling to other skype members.
Also since every kid seems to think they need a cell phone why not try skype with them first if they have an ipod touch. They can chat with you when they are in wifi range and make calls using a mic. By the way a kid does not need a cell phone… everyone else has one. So if they spend the night with someone & need to call you they can borrow their friends or the parents’ phone.
Newspapers are on the verge of extinction due to online content. We all know that. But another reason for their impending doom is that they keep doing things the same old way.
I have a couple small ads running in two different local papers for a couple of small businesses. I try to check to make sure they are up & correct as much as I can. The reason I check is because they have fouled it up before. Well one paper gave me bad information so my ad was online only 3 days a week as opposed to everyday. The other paper had 2 of my ads missing! Why? “Because the website updates on Wednesday night and the ads get re uploaded on Thursday around 11am”. That is true I am sure but utterly ridiculous. Craigslist does not have to “re upload” ads weekly. This process should be automated and done at 2am when no one is reading the online newspaper. That way my ad does not get missed on Thursday morning by a potential customer who is looking for a service provider at a “bad time for the newspaper”.
Ouch. According to consumer guru Clark Howard, Kindle owners are getting jobbed. Apparently the ipad has allowed book publishers to charge a lot higher price for ebooks on Apple’s product. That gave the publishers some leverage with Amazon so now books that were $10 on the Kindle may be a lot harder on your digital wallet. That is not happy news for all the people who got caught up in the Kindle marketing blitz at Christmas time. I was almost one of them.
