No Debt = Good Business

By dawggeek, February 15, 2010 1:20 pm

It is hard for most people to imagine starting a business with ZERO debt. It is just a given to most folks that you need to borrow some money to get rolling. That sounds ok but it creates a habit of borrowing to keep rolling. The thought of needing new equipment immediately goes to using a credit card or going to the bank for bigger purchases. I had this thought for many years as well. But it does not have to be this way.

If you eliminate the thought in your mind that borrowing is even a possibility you instantly get more creative in ways to save the money up to pay for business needs. Debt is easy short term but not easy long term. At best debt is just a cycle that eats your money every week for the rest of your days on Earth. At worst debt becomes your master that crushes you, your business, and your goals.

It is possible to run a great business with no Debt. Apple does it and they are one of the greatest companies in the world. Dave Ramsey does it with his company. By the way, Dave is the radio guy that got me started on a quest to be debt free.

If you have great discipline then you can likely handle debt and use it as a tool. Just be careful with it. It is a dangerous servant and a terrible master. Just know that there are other ways to run a business other than constant debt.

Let Your Business Die Alongside Yellowpages

By dawggeek, January 30, 2010 6:41 pm

Title is a bit harsh I know but the point is the yellow pages are dying. They are still effective for a certain age group but not for too much longer. Be sure you don’t rely on a failing business model to get your advertising message out there. The yellow pages book that is thrown on your driveway is the exact same thing as spam that gets in your email box. It is unsolicited advertising period.

If their business is failing how can they continue to help yours? Better seek new options immediately.  Contact me if I can help you with an online presence.

How to Get Customers to Your Website

By dawggeek, January 4, 2010 2:09 am

Small businesses looking to add a website for their company need to know what will get potential clients to their website. There are many different factors. But the fastest and most inexpensive way is to keep adding content to the website once it is built. The more relevant up to date content , the better google will like your website. That moves you up in the search results.

This is good news for small business person or even a part time business with a small budget. If you have a little bit of free time to devote to updating your website with good information for potential customers then you don’t need a lot of cash to promote your website.

Some businesses are easier than others to write about. For example if you have a construction company there are plenty of topics to write about. But if you run a printing business it might be harder to come up with compelling content day after day. But with the internet you can find so many sources to read about topics relevant to your business it is possible. Just read a lot and write your opinions on your website from the reading you have done.
